The International Organization of Securities Commissions (IOSCO) is celebrating the sixth annual World Investor Week (WIW) from 3 to 9 October 2022. The WIW is aimed at raising awareness of the importance of investor education and investor protection. The IOSCO WIW campaign in 2022 is covering topics such as investor resilience, sustainable finance, crypto assets, and frauds and scams prevention.

In this regard, the WIW is pleased to invite the regulators, interested parties and the general public to the global webinar on Crypto and DeFi investing – Resilience and Investor Protection through Rigour. The webinar, hosted by the IOSCO Asia Pacific Hub in Kuala Lumpur, and supported by the IOSCO Board-level Fintech Task Force (FTF), will discuss Crypto and DeFi issues with impact on investor protection and investor education. Financial innovation, like Crypto and DeFi products and services, may lead to benefits for investors, but it may also present risks that investors must understand to take informed investment decisions.

The IOSCO FTF was established in March 2022 to develop, oversee, deliver, and implement IOSCO’s regulatory agenda for Fintech and crypto-assets. The current FTF work is primarily focused on analysing and responding to market integrity and investor protection concerns. In this context, the Global Webinar on Sustainable Finance and Investor Education and Protection will discuss some of the common types of “investments” in crypto and DeFi, as well as the major risks of these investments, such as scams, hacks or other risks deriving from inappropriate advertising or advice provided by influencers, social media, and other forms of digital engagement.

The webinar will also refer to some recent case studies and will discuss the measures some jurisdictions are taken to educate and protect their investors. Indeed, investor education, together with regulatory, supervisory and enforcement tools could help in creating an ecosystem that protects investors and supports the sound development of Crypto and DeFi products and services.
